Teeth whitening is one of the most requested procedures and can be a fast and effective cosmetic procedure if done right. Doing it right means using a proper whitening agent (that is, a good peroxide gel) and an appropriate accelerator. The most practical accelerator is a lamp using cold blue light with a wavelength of around 480-500 nanometers. This wavelength of light is ideal for accelerating the whitening process of different peroxides, such as hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide.

The procedure consists of, first molding a duplex tray to all top and bottom teeth. Then Peroxide gel is added to a custom formed mouth tray. The customer inserts the tray into the mouth, allowing the front of the teeth to contact directly with the gel. A blue cold fusion lamp is placed directly in front of the customer’s open mouth and ran for 15-20 minutes per session. Results are impressive. A 15-20 minute treatment yields an improvement of between 2-7 shades. The more sessions a person does, the whiter the teeth get.

It is important to note that not all lamps and gels are created equal. Even lamps with similar wavelengths will not produce the same results. Although the wavelength is important, the power output and intensity of the light produced by the lamp are very important too. The stronger the output and intensity, the quicker the gel is activated, which means that you get more action over a certain period of time. The temperature of the light is important for the comfort of the customer – the light must be cold. Some lamps produce warm or hot light that can burn the customer’s mouth, gums or face and it is not as effective at activating the peroxide in the gel. Just as all lamps are not created equal, neither are whitening gels.
